TL;DR
Red pigment from algae; the most powerful antioxidant in the carotenoid family
High evidence for improving skin quality and reducing eye fatigue
Moderate evidence for heart health and muscle recovery
Unique ability to span the entire cell membrane for 360-degree protection
Excellent safety profile
Moderate cost: ~$15-25/month
Best for: Skin health, eye fatigue, 'full-body' antioxidant support
What it is
Astaxanthin is what makes salmon red and gives them the energy to swim upstream. It is 6,000x stronger than Vitamin C and 550x stronger than Vitamin E. Unlike other antioxidants, it never becomes a 'pro-oxidant' (damaging) in the body.
What the research says
Small trials show astaxanthin improves visual acuity and reduces eye fatigue in healthy adults and those with early eye issues [ref3]. Its ability to cross the blood-retinal barrier makes it theoretically relevant for retinal health [ref1]. Evidence is promising but limited compared to established interventions. [1][3]
Astaxanthin improves the 'quality' of your blood. Evidence. Trials have shown it can lower triglycerides and increase 'good' HDL. It also improves blood flow by keeping the blood vessels 'supple' and reducing oxidative stress in the endothelium. [2]
